The Community Health and Literacy program is a home-based family-centered program that sends trained Deaf mentors to visit families who have Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing children for two-hour weekly sessions for 40 weeks during the school year to ensure they remain consistent with academic standards and build communcation skills. The program prepares the family by teaching American Sign Language (ASL) to the child and family members and implementing ASL into their daily learning environments. It is our goal to not only help families communicate, but build deep emotional bonds to combat the isolation that accompanies Deafness.

Most importantly, the mentors teach the children and families how to bridge ASL to English while reading and writing. The families have educational access to:
• Reading and writing literacy
• Language acquisition
• Incidental learning environments
• American Sign Language
• Deaf Culture

In addition, the families will have access to need-based resources and community events. Ongoing educational and employment opportunities for the CHLP staff are provided as well.

If you are interested in joining the Community Health & Literacy Program, we welcome you to apply by clicking the "Sign up for the Community Health and Literacy Program" button below. Once you submit your application form, it will be reviewed and we will get in touch with you.

ASL Story Time

We organize a monthly ASL Storytime event that is fun and interactive for families with Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing children, as well as siblings and KODAs (Kids of Deaf Adults). During the event, our Deaf mentor reads a book aloud in ASL, and we provide an interpreter. Afterward, our Art Director leads an art and craft activity. It is a great opportunity to meet other families and Deaf mentors. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates on upcoming events!

We are seeking Community Health and Literacy mentors to join our team! This professional will work with families in their homes or public area to teach them American Sign Language and Deaf Culture.
