Artistry Communication Opportunity Resources Nurture
Sunday, July 22 - Friday, July 27, 2012
Program Director: Kathy Derderian
ACORN Theatre Camp promotes and fosters artistry, communication, opportunity, resourcefulness and nurture. In an outdoor retreat-style environment deaf and hard of hearing middle school and high school aged students use theatre craft to encourage pride, self-esteem, and independence.
This year, students will be performing Oliver Button is a Sissy, a children's picture book written and illustrated by Tomie dePaola. It is the story of a boy who stands up to bullies, not by fighting, but by staying true to himself. The story, based on the childhood experiences of Tomie dePaola, is a simple one. Oliver Button doesn’t like sports like the other boys do. He likes to read, draw pictures, dress up in costumes, and sing and dance. Even his father calls him a "sissy" and tells him to play ball. But Oliver isn’t good at sports and he isn’t interested.
Led by deaf actors Camille Jeter-Lorello and Frank Dattolo, ACORN participants will learn more than just the art of theater, but A.R.T. of life: Adjustment, Respect, and Teamwork!
