Family Week Two
Deaf or Hard of Hearing children between the ages of 1-6
Sunday, July 15 - Friday, July 20, 2012
Janet S. Weinstock is the English content specialist for K-12 at the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center. Janet has developed and conducted a variety of workshops and presentations focused mainly on putting theory to practice in home and educational settings.
During Family Week Two she will lead the participants through interactive hands-on activities with her workshop: “Culture and Language “R” Us.” The workshop includes a review of children’s literature and pre-literacy practices that support American Sign Language (ASL) & English language development. Through various approaches, the participants will learn how to make sounds of the English language visible and integrate Deaf culture in daily family life. Applications in early educational settings will also be explored. Family members, caregivers, and professionals are encouraged to participate and learn techniques that can be used to promote signing, reading, and writing with very young Deaf children. Video, print, and non-print materials and resources will be shared.
While parents attend morning classes, children participate in drama, horseback riding, boating, hiking, arts & crafts, and games. Afternoons and evenings are filled with activities for the whole family to enjoy.
