Family Week One
Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children between the ages 7 -14
Sunday, July 8 - Friday, July 13, 2012
Dr. Richard L. Jeffries, Jr. is currently a training specialist with the Planning, Development and Dissemination Department at the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center. As a trainer, Richard has travelled extensively over the country providing various literacy-based workshops such as: Literacy – It All Connects, Read It Again and Again, Leading from Behind: Language Experience in Action, Reading to Deaf Children: Learning from Deaf Adults, and 6+1 Traits Writing Assessment.
During Family Week One Richard will focus on “Reading Strategies at Home.” He will provide training to parents on effective strategies to encourage children to read at home, including tips on how to select books that motivate their children to read.
At the conclusion of Family Week, parents will be familiar with effective reading strategies that can be employed to help their children become successful readers at home. Parents will also learn different strategies for selecting books that optimize their children's reading development and how to use these strategies to maintain their children's literacy development during the summer or other times they are not in school.
While parents attend morning classes, children participate in drama, horseback riding, boating, hiking, arts & crafts, and games. Afternoons and evenings are filled with activities for the whole family to enjoy.
